Laminate vs LVT/Luxury Vinyl Tile Flooring — What's the Difference?
Two of the most popular flooring choices for London and Surrey homes are laminate and luxury vinyl tile (LVT) — and while they can look similar, they're very different products with different strengths. FAQs
What is laminate?
Laminate is a synthetic flooring product made from a high-density fibreboard (HDF) core, topped with a photographic layer that replicates the look of wood, stone or tile. A clear protective wear layer sits on top, giving laminate its scratch and stain resistance. It's one of the most affordable flooring options available and comes in a huge range of styles and finishes.
What is LVT?
LVT stands for Luxury Vinyl Tile — a premium vinyl flooring product made from multiple layers of vinyl, including a realistic printed design layer and a tough wear layer on top. Modern LVT is highly realistic, extremely durable and 100% waterproof, making it suitable for rooms where laminate wouldn't cope.
How do thicknesses differ?
Laminate typically ranges from 6mm to 12mm thick — the thicker the board, the more solid it feels underfoot and the better it absorbs sound. LVT is generally thinner, usually 2mm to 8mm, though its multi-layer construction gives it excellent stability despite the lower profile.
What materials are used?
Laminate uses a fibreboard core — which means it can swell or warp if exposed to standing water. LVT is made entirely from vinyl layers — completely waterproof throughout, not just on the surface.
What appearances are available?
Both laminate and LVT come in a wide range of wood effect, stone effect and tile effect designs, including herringbone, chevron and plank formats. The gap in realism between the two has narrowed significantly in recent years — premium laminate and LVT both look convincingly like real wood or stone.
Which is better for kitchens, bathrooms and moisture areas?
LVT is the clear winner for moisture-prone areas. It handles spills, humidity and even occasional flooding without damage. Laminate can cope with light moisture but should not be used in bathrooms or anywhere water might sit on the surface for extended periods.
Which is better for underfloor heating?
Both laminate and LVT are compatible with underfloor heating systems, but always check the manufacturer's specifications for maximum temperature limits and thermal resistance ratings before installing.
Which is more affordable?
Laminate is generally cheaper — starting from around £9.50/m² — making it the budget-friendly option for larger areas. LVT typically starts from £19.50/m² but offers better durability and waterproofing that may save money on repairs or replacements over time.
For living rooms, bedrooms and hallways where moisture isn't a concern — laminate is an excellent, cost-effective choice. For kitchens, bathrooms, utility rooms or open-plan spaces that connect to a kitchen — LVT is the better long-term investment.
